Who will Mike Caldwell pluck?
March 11, 2022
Joe moans between sips of Big Storm Beer when the Jacksonville Jaguars signed Mike Caldwell to be their defensive coordinator.
Caldwell is a longtime protege of Todd Bowles and has coached Tampa Bay inside linebackers for the past three years. He arrived in Jacksonville in January pledging to build on the Jags’ blitz program from last season.
Joe suspects Caldwell will have a lot of influence in overhauling the Jags’ defense, as he’s close with new Jacksonville head coach Doug Pederson, who dates back decades.
The point here is that the Jaguars have about a $40 million cap and the ability to attract guys like Bucs pending free agents Jordan Whitehead and Will Gholston.
Caldwell has seen with his own eyes how hard-working, team-first they are. And relatively speaking in the free agent market, they are affordable.
Joe is willing to bet the Bucs lose at least one defensive free agent to Jacksonville. All the perks of playing and living in Florida are also available there, so it’s not like the Bucs have any special pulling power. Heck, the Bucs’ defensive free agents can’t even be sure who their 2023 head coach and coordinator would be in Tampa.
