The Meet Group just launched a live dating game

Publicly listed social media conglomerate The meeting groupbehind apps like Meet me and Tagged adds another feature to its roster: a live dating game called next date.

The New Hope-based tech company launched the game in late October, saying in a statement that users can “play in their own dating game.”

The game setup is similar to speed dating, where a user can click on live stream “dates”. Pairs have 90 seconds to choose “next”, which will move the user to the next person or “date”, which allows users to connect via video chat in the future.

Yes, it’s a bit like “following,” the better/worse MTV early 21st century spectacle.

The game, which is available on MeetMe and Skout apps starting Oct. 29 also gives users chat prompts to help “assess compatibility,” the company said. There is also a date tab that makes it easy to find users by specific age, gender, and location preferences.

“We believe that more and more linear programming experiences will have a livestream analogue, and we don’t believe anyone has cracked the code of the live dating game yet,” the Meet Group CEO said. Geoff Cook. “We see NextDate as a way to further grow our video audience with a new type of content that resonates with our largest segment: users interested in dating.”

The company said it is testing a beta version of the game in the UK and hopes to achieve the goal of increasing video viewership by 20% by the first quarter of 2020. The company also hopes to launch NextDate on its other applications, such as Tagged and LOVOO in the coming months.

Earlier this year, The Meet Group added a gay dating app to its portfolio by acquiring the Seattle-based company growl, an app that then had about 200,000 daily users.

In January, Cook said Technically that the company’s focus on live video and in-app giveaways helped social media beat its revenue by $4.5 million in 2018. In total, the company’s brands have generated $178 million in revenue, he said.
