Gavin and Stacey’s Mick Shipman is the ultimate British ‘dad’ model, according to a study.
Essex’s father figure – played by actor Larry Lamb – is a favorite among dads due to his down-to-earth attitude, calm head and good humour.
He came second in a poll to find the world’s 30 best dad models – beaten only by ‘Uncle’ Phil Banks from US comedy The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
However, the survey of 1,000 fathers revealed that 48% of them think the on-screen role models are unrealistic and an “impossible” example to follow.
One in five thinks he has too much free time and 28% think it’s easy because he has no financial constraints.
Other top small-screen dads include Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor from the American sitcom Home Improvement and even Bandit from the children’s show Bluey.
Fatherhood takes patience
The survey was commissioned by experts OnePoll, whose head of research, Mark Hodson, said: ‘Most of what we see on TV has a bit of a shine to it – and parenting roles aren’t different.
“This search aimed to find the big screen dads who most inspire dads across the UK.
“But television is not real life – as long as you and your family are happy – most of the time – then the fathers in this country are doing a good job.”
The study also found that patience was the number one thing fathers need to master to be a good father figure, according to 47% of respondents.
Another 46% think it’s very important to perfect ‘dad jokes’ and have a sense of humor, and the same percentage think it’s essential to spend as much time as possible with children .
More than a third think a ‘good dad’ is someone who is dependable and happy to spend time with the children without the other parent being around.
However, one in five admit he is unsure whether he is a ‘good dad’ or not – 63% think he is.
Almost a third (32%) took inspiration from their own father for how to do it themselves, while 18% took inspiration from their grandfather.
But 13% turn to celebrity dads for advice on how to do the best job possible, while 15% turn to father figures on TV.
