NEW YORK – The Orioles are trying to avoid being swept today in a three-game series at Yankee Stadium for the first time since 2017.
The 10-day road trip ends in the cold Bronx with southpaw Bruce Zimmermann on the mound and Ryan Mountcastle still on the bench.
Mountcastle was scratched yesterday with a stiff neck.
Cedric Mullins is the designated hitter, Ryan McKenna is in center field and Trey Mancini plays at first base.
Zimmermann has a 1.20 ERA and 1.133 WHIP in three starts and is averaging 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings. He faced the Yankees on April 17 and shut them out in five innings.
The Baltimore native and Loyola Blakefield graduate makes his first New York appearance.
Orioles pitchers have given up home runs the past six games after allowing just three in the first 12. Fourteen were hit in those six games.
Orioles hitters have homered in three straight games. However, the club is 0-7 when it homers.
Anthony Santander drove in a game-tying home run last night and reached base in all 18 games this season, and 19 since September 2021. He’s in the right field today.
Anthony Bemboom is catching and Kelvin Gutiérrez is at third base.
The Orioles are 3-6 on the trip. They begin a 10-game homestand Friday night, taking on the Red Sox, Twins and Royals.
Yankees right-hander Jameson Taillon allowed two runs and three hits in 4 2/3 innings in an April 16 start at Baltimore. Cedric Mullins homered.
