The South Carolina GOP primary will be mostly drama-free. Still, all eyes are on the 1st Congressional District, where Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) is seeking renomination against Donald Trump-endorsed Katie Arrington in another test of the former president’s influence within the party.
Arrington won a shock primary victory over Mark Sanford in 2018, losing to Democrat Joe Cunningham in the general election, the first time a Republican has lost that seat in nearly 40 years.
Mace, the first woman to graduate from the Citadel’s Corps of Cadets program, ran for the seat in 2020 with Trump’s endorsement and edged out Cunningham by about 6,000 votes. Polls for the House primary races are sporadic, but a Trafalgar Group poll taken in late May shows Mace with a 5-point lead.
Arrington, for his part, plays the role of a Trump sidekick to perfection. During the one debate she had with Mace, Arrington managed to make sure she told everyone watching how hard she would fight to keep critical race theory and the “transgender agenda” out. classrooms – something mainly reserved for national and local authorities. She also accused Mace of acting like a “liberal” and a “RINO”, or “Republican in name only”.
