Gillaspie Orioles option (plus lineup and notes)

The Orioles activated reliever Joey Krehbiel from the 15-day injured list and opted for right-hander Logan Gillaspie at Triple-A Norfolk. Gillaspie was informed of the move last night.

Krehbiel, who was sidelined with right shoulder tendonitis, has a 2.74 ERA and 1.130 WHIP through 23 innings. Gillaspie appeared in 11 games with the Orioles and allowed five earned runs (six total) and 15 hits in 10 1/3 innings.

Gillaspie was charged with four runs and five hits Monday in the 1/3 inning at Toronto.

Adley Rutschman and Cedric Mullins are on the bench today.

Austin Hays leads and serves as the designated hitter. Trey Mancini is in right field, Ryan McKenna at center and Anthony Santander at left.

Richie Martin is the second baseman in a right-handed formation.

Rutschman drove in the lone run last night with a seventh-inning single. He’s reached base in eight straight games and is 10-for-29 (.345) with five doubles, one home run, four RBIs, three walks and six runs scored since June 10.

Mancini has reached base in 17 of his last 18 games.

Ryan Mountcastle is 12-for-31 (.387) with four doubles, four home runs, eight RBIs and nine runs scored during a seven-game hitting streak.

Félix Bautista has not allowed an earned run in 14 consecutive games since May 18, a period of 12 1/3 innings.

Rays left-hander Jeffrey Springs makes his ninth start and 17e appearance. He has a 1.45 ERA and a .906 WHIP with 50 strikeouts in 49 2/3 innings.

Springs’ first two appearances came in relief against the Orioles and he struck out all four batters with three strikeouts. He started May 21 in Baltimore and allowed one hit with four walks and seven strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

Ji-Man Choi had a hit in 14 of his last 15 games, cutting .346/.397/.558 (18 for 52) with five doubles, two home runs, 13 RBIs, five walks and eight runs scored.

The Rays allowed nine points during a season-high four-game losing streak. The Orioles ruled them out last night for the first time since May 4, 2019.
