The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards are underway and the star-studded evening welcomes some of the biggest stars from the film and television industry who arrive in style to celebrate the best works of the year. The 2022 Emmys has major shows such as Succession, Squid Game and more competing this year with SNL’s Kenan Thompson hosting it for the first time.
Awards show opening monologues are often something fans look forward to given that hosts have been known to take funny jabs at not only the entertainment industry, but actors and all the scandals in the world. which they were involved. At the 2022 Emmys, Thompson had a rather fun moment in his monologue as he kicked it off with a dance to a medley of popular TV theme songs while also alluding to the lack of diversity on those shows.
During his monologue, Kenan also joked about Leonardo DiCaprio making headlines for his latest breakup with Camila Morrone. While mentioning one of the biggest nominees of the night, Zendaya, Kenan said, “Zendaya just turned 26 last week. 26 is a weird age in Hollywood. I mean, you’re young enough to play a high school kid, but you’re too old to date Leonardo DiCaprio.”
Not only that, the host didn’t give a chance to joke about the Oscars incident involving the slapping of Will Smith and Chris Rock. Thompson noted how Regina Hall, who hosted this year’s Oscars, was also in the audience, saying, “Surprised she’s at another awards show, girl, you’re brave” jokingly, in what appeared to be a reference to Will Smith slapping Chris Rock.
