Blog: Lots of sun, quick warming up and good surfing?

No doubt about it … today is shaping up to be good. Now it might not have been so nice going out this morning as the temperatures started in the 30s and 40s. However, we are going to warm up quickly today. There is a large area of high pressure over the area. It has built up over our heads which cut off the strong northerly winds that we have had for the last 3-4 days.

Regional weather map

There is a sharp increase in the jet stream over the eastern United States with a steep dip to the west.

Jet stream

This creates some warming for the eastern half of the country over the next few days.

Temperature deviation from the mean

We will have full / strong sunshine all day. The winds will be light and variable. The high temperatures will therefore climb to low 70 this afternoon. This will be an increase of about 30 (ish) degrees in temperatures between morning and afternoon. It is recommended to dress in layers. Tomorrow we will have similar weather conditions, but a weak rotating wind will move into the region from the northeast. This will only lower our temperatures by a few degrees because we will still have plenty of sun. The high temperatures will be in the 60s above close to 70.

Weather Forecast Tomorrow

We will have a southerly wind which will develop on Thursday with partly cloudy skies. The weather will be fine for Veterans Day. High temperatures will increase until the mid-1970s.

By Friday, humidity will increase a bit from the south. We will have a lot of clouds. The winds will be southerly and stronger. The temperatures will therefore still be warm. We’ll move into the mid-1970s. Models vary a bit on timing, but they agree well over a large area of rain entering the area.

GFS model (Friday)

A cold front will set in later in the day. This could create a few thunderstorms when it arrives. The rain could recede by the end of the afternoon, but we’ll see. Then we will cool off and dry off over the weekend. High temperatures will drop in the 1950s and 1960s.

Today can be a very good day for surfers. We definitely have the high waves. Check out the view in Rodanthe, NC this morning from Surfchex.com.

We just need them to clean up a bit. Take a look at the wave height:

Surf forecast

Winds will be variable at 5-10mph.

Tidal flooding will only be minor this morning on the Outer Banks. There might still be a brief ocean overflow there, but it won’t be as bad as the last two days. No tidal flooding is expected elsewhere in the region.
